Create network diagram microsoft project 2007

A network diagram will help us focus in on the activity relationships. To display a network diagram of the schedule select the Task tab, View ribbon group, Gantt chart drop down menu, and Network Diagram, Figure 2.

Note the nodes that are not connected are summary tasks. To do this select the Format tab, Format ribbon group, and Layout, Figure 4. The main issue now is that we cannot see the entire schedule in the network, so we use the zoom scroll in the lower right corner of the screen, Figure 7, to adjust the size of the display. In Figure 9 the milestones Notice to Proceed and Project Start are distinguished by their hexagonal shape.

Task nodes are rectangular in shape. Critical tasks are in red and non-critical are blue. Each task node provides the task name, start, finish, duration, resources, and ID. This is probably more information than we need and it makes distinguishing any task node information near impossible or difficult to read when the entire schedule network is displayed, as in Figure 8. Now we can clearly see the entire schedule network and associated IDs, Figure With only the ID displayed as in Figure 11 we can easily see the entire network in a way that provides useful insight.

The node task predecessor and successor is apparent for each node. Choose Task Information. To select multiple tasks that are not listed consecutively, hold down CTRL and click each task. To select tasks that are listed consecutively, click the first task, hold down SHIFT, and then click the last task that you want to select in the list. Choose Unlink Tasks.

If you set Calculation mode for your project to Manual , the successor task will not move. To reset the task constraint to be more flexible, select the task, choose Task Information , and then select the Advanced tab.

To make task dependencies override inflexible constraints for all tasks, on the Tools menu, choose Options , and then select the Schedule tab. To set calculations to automatic, on the Tools menu, choose Options , and then select the Calculation tab. What do you want to do? Insert a task between linked tasks You can set up Project so that when you insert a new task between linked tasks, the new task is automatically linked to the surrounding tasks.

Select the Autolink inserted or moved tasks check box. Insert the new task. Point to the center of the predecessor task box. Drag the line to the successor task box.

Drag the line to the successor task's calendar bar. Link manually scheduled tasks When you link a manually scheduled task to another task, Project places the manually scheduled task relative to the other task. Clear the Update manually scheduled tasks when editing links check box. Other ways to link tasks If you have tasks that depend on the successful completion of an entire project, consider setting up a master project.

Top of Page Change or remove task dependencies After tasks are linked to create task dependencies, you can easily change or remove the dependencies, if needed, by doing any of the following: Change the link type of a task dependency By default, Project links tasks in a finish-to-start dependency.

These instructions are specific to Microsoft Project About linking tasks Link tasks by using the Gantt Chart view Link tasks by using the Network Diagram view Link tasks by using the Calendar view Turn autolinking on or off Change or remove task dependencies Troubleshooting About linking tasks When you link tasks in Project, the default link type is finish-to-start. Under Link style , select Rectilinear or Straight. Rectilinear links look like this , and straight links look like this.
